Adobe Protection FAQ’s

Repairing and Protecting Adobe Bricks

Adobe Home Restoration – Frequently Asked Questions

What is the number one enemy of adobe, and how does protection guard against it?

The number one enemy is moisture. Our protection process uses advanced, breathable water repellents that create a hydrophobic barrier, causing water to bead and run off the wall rather than soaking into the porous adobe structure.

What is the difference between a protective sealer and a protective coating for adobe?

A sealer (like most traditional paints or clear coats) forms a film that traps moisture inside. A coating (the breathable type we use) penetrates the surface and allows water vapor to escape while repelling liquid water from the exterior.

How often does an adobe wall need re-coating or re-application of the protective repellent?

The lifespan of high-quality, professional-grade silane/siloxane repellents is typically 5 to 10 years, depending on wall exposure. We recommend an inspection every 5 years to determine if re-application is necessary.

Can I use regular exterior paint on my adobe home for protection?

Absolutely not. Most latex or acrylic paints are not vapor-permeable enough for adobe. They trap moisture released from the earth or condensation inside the wall, leading to rapid deterioration and spalling of the adobe brick and surface plaster.

Is the protective water repellent visible after application?

No. The professional-grade repellents we use are designed to be clear and invisible. They penetrate the wall surface and do not change the color, texture, or aesthetic appearance of your adobe or stucco finish.

Does the wall protection process include safeguarding the base of the wall (the foundation)?

Yes. Our process includes making sure the base, or “coving,” is properly sealed and that the immediate surrounding grade slopes away from the foundation to prevent rising damp (capillary action drawing moisture up from the soil).

Does protection prevent all future cracking and maintenance needs?

No. Protection significantly minimizes water damage and deterioration, but it does not stop the natural expansion and contraction of the earth or the structure. Routine maintenance will still be required to address minor stress cracks.

What makes your protective material "breathable"?

Our silane/siloxane products bond to the pores of the adobe but do not fill them completely. This structure is large enough to allow tiny water vapor molecules to pass through and escape (breathe), but small enough to repel larger liquid water molecules (rain).

Before applying a protective coating, what prep work does The Adobe Guys Tucson perform?

We first repair all existing cracks and spalls with compatible materials. Then, we thoroughly clean the wall to remove dirt, dust, and any loose material to ensure maximum penetration and bonding of the breathable repellent.
