Brick Replacement/Patching
For severely damaged or missing adobe blocks, The Adobe Guys will either:

Patch: Fill the cavity with the compatible repair mixture, building it up in layers.

Replace: Source or custom-make an appropriately sized and compatible new adobe brick and set it in place with the correct mortar.

Adobe Protection
Water damage is the most common issue we find with adobe. Causes can be from vegetation planted to close to the adobe or water dripping from the roof.
Breathable Water Repellant
The Adobe Guys use high-quality, professional-grade silane/siloxane water repellents that are specifically formulated for adobe, rammed earth, and porous masonry.
Vapor Permeability
This is the most critical feature. The repellent prevents liquid water from entering but still allows the adobe wall to exhale water vapor. This ensures any moisture trapped inside the wall (from condensation or rising damp) can escape, preventing internal damage, mold, and brick spalling.
Application Technique
The product is typically applied using a low-pressure sprayer in a thorough flood coat method. For porous adobe, a “wet on damp” technique (applying subsequent coats before the first one is dry) is often used to ensure deep saturation and maximum coverage without allowing the repellent to dry and repel the subsequent applications.
Curing
The product is allowed the necessary time to fully cure, which can take several hours to days depending on humidity and temperature.

Identify Deterioration
The most crucial step. A professional identifies all sources of water damage (e.g., roof leaks, rising damp from foundation, poor drainage/sprinklers, or compromised coatings).
Material Analysis
Determine the specific type of adobe (sun-dried/unstabilized, cement-stabilized, or burnt adobe) and the composition of the original mortar and plaster. This is essential to ensure new materials are compatible (share similar porosity, density, and expansion rates).
Drainage Correction
Implement solutions like installing swales, French drains, or extended scuppers (rainwater downspouts) to move water well away from the adobe foundation.
Wall Consolidation & Repair

Crumbling or spalled (flaked) adobe is carefully removed back to the solid, historic core.

New adobe bricks or a specialty repair mixture (often consisting of mud, sand, and straw, formulated to match the existing adobe) are integrated into the wall.

Large structural cracks are repaired by repointing (filling the mortar joint) or sometimes by installing compatible stabilization elements (like hidden tension rods) to secure the structure while preserving the original earthen wall appearance.
