Adobe Repairs – FAQ’s

Repairing and Protecting Adobe Bricks

Adobe Repair Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most common cause of adobe wall deterioration in Tucson?

Moisture intrusion. This is usually caused by poor roof drainage (scuppers), rising damp from the foundation, or sprinkler over-spray at the base of the wall. We first address the source before repairing the damage.

What types of adobe do you repair?

We are experts in all regional adobe types, including traditional sun-dried mud adobe, burnt adobe (the common red/orange brick in Tucson), and cement-stabilized adobe.

Can I just use regular stucco or concrete to patch an adobe crack?

No, this is a “death sentence” for unstabilized adobe. Cement-based materials are too hard and non-porous. They trap moisture inside the softer adobe brick, accelerating its deterioration and causing spalling (flaking).

How do you repair a large hole or missing adobe brick?

We use a compatible repair mixture (often mud, sand, and straw, or a specialty adobe mortar) that is similar in strength and porosity to the original adobe, ensuring the repair breathes and moves with the existing wall.

How can I tell if my burnt adobe home needs repair or just sealing?

If the adobe surfaces are soft, powdery, crumbling, or show deep cracks, repair is needed. If they are solid but darken immediately when wet, they need a proper, breathable water repellent/sealing.

What is "spalling" and why does it happen to adobe?

Spalling is when the surface of the brick flakes or crumbles off. It is caused by salts and moisture moving through the brick. When the water evaporates, the salt crystallizes just below the surface, popping off the brick face.

Do you offer color matching for the existing stucco or plaster?

Yes. Our expertise includes custom blending finishes and pigments to ensure the repair patch or new coating is seamlessly blended to match the existing color and texture of your home.

How far away should I keep plants and sprinklers from my adobe walls?

We strongly recommend maintaining a minimum distance of 36 inches (3 feet) between the walls and any regularly watered plants or sprinkler heads to prevent chronic moisture absorption at the base.

How long does an adobe repair typically take?

It varies greatly based on the extent of the damage. Small patches may take a day, but large structural repairs and drying/curing time for plasters can take several days or even weeks for the overall process.
